Tissue retraction leaves us a clearer margin and the cord can help absorb gingival fluids for a dryer field resulting in better impression taking, intra-oral scanning or restoration bonding.

However, sometimes we skip it because of worrying that it will hurt the patient (if no LA) or the delicate soft tissue… and it can be time consuming too.

Surprisingly, the thick looking NM4 used with the right cords makes the job pretty painlessly and effortlessly.
